Pattern Overview

Phlegm Wheezing is a common pattern in asthma, characterized by **airway

mucus hypersecretion, wheezing with phlegm sound, copious sticky sputum,

and chest tightness. The core pathogenesis is Phlegm-turbidity

obstructing the Lung**, causing Lung Qi to fail to descend, mucus

obstruction, and wheezing.

Key Symptoms and Differentiation Points

Differentiation Dimension Manifestations
Primary Symptoms

Associated Symptoms

Pathogenesis

Acupuncture Point Prescription

Point Location Function
Fenglong (ST40)

to the tibial crest | Transforms Phlegm and Dampness |

Feishu (BL13) On the upper back, 1.5 cun lateral to T3

Back-Shu point of Lung meridian; regulates Lung Qi |

Zhongwan (RN12) 4 cun above the umbilicus

Stomach; harmonizes the Stomach |

Pishu (BL20) Lower back, 1.5 cun lateral to T11

of Spleen meridian; strengthens Spleen Qi |

Dingchuan (EX-B1) 0.5 cun lateral to GV14 (below C7)

point specifically for asthma; stops wheezing |

Western Mechanism Reference

Airway mucus hypersecretion with mucus plug obstruction of small

airways, airflow limitation, and MUC5AC overexpression. Phlegm Wheezing

corresponds to asthma with mucus hypersecretion, where goblet cell

hyperplasia and MUC5AC overexpression contribute to mucus plug formation

and airflow obstruction.
