Pattern Overview

Wind-Cold Binding the Exterior is a pattern in eczema, characterized by cold-induced mast cell degranulation, winter exacerbation, urticarial lesions, and intense itching. The core pathogenesis is invasion of Wind-Cold pathogens into the exterior, causing cold-induced mast cell degranulation and skin lesions.

Key Symptoms and Differentiation Points

Differentiation DimensionManifestations
Primary SymptomsUrticarial lesions, intense itching, worse with cold exposure, winter exacerbation
Associated SymptomsChills, no sweating, nasal congestion, headache
Tongue and PulsePale red tongue with thin white coating, floating and tense pulse
PathogenesisWind-Cold pathogens binding the exterior
EtiologyCold exposure, winter season, constitutional Wind-Cold, cold urticaria

Acupuncture Point Prescription

PointLocationFunction

Western Mechanism Reference

Cold-induced mast cell degranulation and histamine release, with cold urticaria or eczema aggravated by cold. Wind-Cold Binding the Exterior corresponds to cold-induced eczema or urticaria, where cold exposure activates TRPA1/TRPM8 channels inducing mast cell degranulation and histamine release.
