Pattern Overview
Liver-Kidney Deficiency is a chronic degenerative pattern in restless leg syndrome, characterized by neurodegenerative component, restlessness, weakness, and aggravation with overwork. The core pathogenesis is insufficient nourishment of the tendons by Liver Blood and Kidney Essence, leading to neurodegenerative changes and restless sensations.
Key Symptoms and Differentiation Points
| Differentiation Dimension | Manifestations |
| :— | :— |
| Primary Symptoms | Restless legs, weakness, worse with overwork, restlessness |
| Associated Symptoms | Soreness in the lower back and knees, dizziness, fatigue, tinnitus |
| Tongue and Pulse | Pale red tongue with little coating, thready and weak pulse |
| Pathogenesis | Liver-Kidney deficiency failing to nourish the leg tendons |
| Etiology | Aging, chronic illness, neurodegenerative changes, overwork |
Acupuncture Point Prescription
| Point | Location | Function |
| :— | :— | :— |
| BL23 Shenshu | Lower back, 1.5 cun lateral to L2 | Tonifies Kidney Qi and Essence |
| KI3 Taixi | Depression between medial malleolus and Achilles tendon | Source point of Kidney meridian; nourishes Kidney Yin |
| LR3 Taichong | Dorsum of the foot, between the 1st and 2nd metatarsals | Soothes Liver Qi and regulates Qi flow |
| GB34 Yanglingquan | Depression below the head of the fibula | Master point for tendons; relaxes leg muscles |
Clinical Recommendation: Filiform needle, reinforcing method; moxibustion may be applied to Shenshu to warm and tonify.
Herbal Formula
Base Formula: Zuo Gui Wan (左归丸)

Modifications
| Associated Symptoms | Additions/Subtractions |
| :— | :— |
| Severe restlessness | Add Suan Zao Ren, Bai Zi Ren to calm the spirit |
| Lower back and knee soreness | Add Du Zhong, Xu Duan to strengthen the lower back |
| Fatigue | Add Huang Qi, Dang Shen to supplement Qi |
Western Mechanism Reference
Neurodegenerative component with reduced dopaminergic function, iron dysregulation, and impaired nerve transmission. Liver-Kidney Deficiency corresponds to RLS with neurodegenerative features, where reduced dopaminergic function and impaired iron metabolism contribute to neuronal hyperexcitability and restless sensations.
